Massa Alto' = Highest Level
Maxalto was founded in 1975 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, the founder of B&B Italia. He was passionate about preserving and enhancing the traditional craftsmanship techniques that had created so many fine pieces of furniture. Afra & Tobia Scarpa were the first interpreters of this vision, designing a series of iconic wooden furniture items through the use of rare, ancient production techniques typical of cabinet and lute making.
The name Maxalto is from "Massa Alto" which in Venetian dialect means "the highest", to underscore the objective of excellence that distinguishes its products.
1995 heralded a new era with the collaboration of Antonio Citterio, becoming sole designer and artistic director.
Citterio was influenced by the typologies and styles of French Modernism between the 1920’s and 1940’s.
It’s a complete range of furniture with a "New Classic' flavour that combines sophisticated hand made craftsmanship with today's latest technology.
